tozero Opens First Industrial-Scale Battery Recycling Plant in Europe

March 27, 2026

The Scoop

German startup tozero, founded in 2022 by Sarah Fleischer & Ksenija Milicevic Neumann, has officially launched its first industrial battery recycling plant in Bavaria, Germany. This plant boasts the capacity to process 1,500 tonnes of battery waste per year, marking a significant step towards sustainable battery material sourcing within Europe.

The Context

Europe faces a critical challenge in securing its supply of lithium and graphite, both essential components for electric vehicle (EV) batteries. Currently, the continent heavily relies on imports from regions like China and South America. tozero's innovative plant addresses this dependence by employing a novel, acid-free hydrometallurgy process. This environmentally friendly approach allows for the efficient recovery of valuable battery materials from end-of-life batteries and production scrap. The initiative aligns perfectly with the European Union's ambitious goals outlined in the Critical Raw Materials Act, which aims to source at least 25% of the EU's strategic raw materials from recycled sources. Securing domestic sources of these materials is crucial for Europe's economic and strategic autonomy in the rapidly growing EV market.
